Power Drill Housing Grip Scuff Solution: DX853C Filled PP
  • Product Details

A cordless drill housing is a structural component. It carries the motor reaction torque, uses thin highly ribbed walls to keep weight down, and is squeezed by a hand — often gloved — at every use, then set down on rough surfaces. Damage accumulates fastest exactly where the shell is thinnest. Running DX853C at 1.5–2.5% in the filled PP housing compound raises surface durability while the internal lubrication lowers the injection pressure those long, thin, highly ribbed walls demand.

Why a drill housing scuffs where it matters most

  • Glove-loaded abrasion — fabric plus embedded grit acts across the grip area on every pick-up, which is the highest-contact zone on the tool.
  • Site contact — housings are laid on concrete and scaffolding, and stepped on; the load concentrates on the smallest radius, usually the battery-slot rail.
  • Pressure-limited fill — thin reinforced walls mean the machine runs near its limit, leaving a degraded, oriented skin that both looks inconsistent and mars readily.

Xiangxi PP anti-scratch grades

All three grades are metered into polypropylene and PP/TPE systems inside the same 0.5–5% band; they differ in the part geometry and filler system each one is matched to.

Which grade for a power drill housing

  • DX853C — matched to filled polypropylene housings that must meet both structural and appearance requirements; run at 1.5–2.5%.
  • DX8502A — for the overmoulded soft grip and other PP/TPE tactile parts, which the same product family also covers.
  • DX852 — compare it where the housing is glass-filled and very thin-walled, since fibre exposure then competes with scratch as the primary defect.

Processing notes

  • Add the pellet at the throat; reinforced compounds respond well because the melt wets glass and mineral more effectively.
  • Start at 1.5% on 20–30% reinforced housings and step upward in half-point increments.
  • Log machine data rather than relying on visual judgement alone — pressure, motor load and cushion all move before the surface does.
  • Re-run the electrical safety and flammability checks once the compound change is finalised and file the reports.

Results to verify in your own lab

  • Scuff rating on the grip area — improved after a repeatable gloved-hand and grit contact cycle.
  • Injection pressure and motor load — both lower with the same tool and material.
  • Drop and impact performance — unchanged; this is required for structural housings.
  • Rail and battery-slot edges — fewer chips at the edges most often struck.

Frequently asked questions

Does the housing still meet impact requirements?

Impact is set by the base resin and reinforcement; nothing here replaces them. Verify ISO 179 Charpy and your own drop specification on the finished tool.

Will the grip zone feel different to the operator?

Friction is reduced slightly, but most tools specify textured or overmoulded grip areas precisely because feel matters, so those should be evaluated as moulded.

Can it be used in glass-filled as well as mineral-filled housings?

Yes. With glass the bigger visible win is usually less fibre float, so it is worth comparing DX852 in parallel on those variants.

Does it have any effect on electrical safety or flammability?

The change itself does not add conductivity or combustibility, but any compound change on a power tool should be re-verified against UL 94 and the relevant insulation requirements.

How much should the first trials use?

Begin at 1.5%, and only reach 2.5% if pressure and appearance have not yet levelled off. Few programmes benefit beyond that point.

What paperwork supports the delivery?

ISO 9001 production control with a batch certificate of analysis, plus REACH and RoHS documentation supported by SGS reports.
